Cold Stone Creamery, co-founded in 1988 by Donald and Susan Sutherland, was one of the first ice cream parlors to deviate from traditional ice cream and create a smoother and creamier super-premium ice cream. Armed with their new product the two opened their first store in Tempe, Arizona. The parlor was an instant success as patrons loved the idea of being able to choose their ice cream flavor and the toppings they wanted folded into the dessert. The founders capitalized on the success of the first location and quickly began opening franchises along the west coast. Over the years the company has grown into the sixth best selling brand of ice cream and has hundreds of locations throughout the United States, as well as, several international locations.
