    A Brief History

    Destination Maternity was founded in 1982 by Rebecca Matthias under the name Mothers Work. 7 years after its foundation the brand opened its first store in 1989 in Boston. Quickly customers began pouring into the store and operations began to expand as more than 40 stores opened over the course of the next 12 months. It wasn’t until 1997 when the retailer opened its e-commerce marketplace that the brand became a global phenomenon. Mothers-to-be everywhere wanted the trendy clothing they saw in catalogs and on commercials and advertisement. Other retailers took notice as well, as the Kohl’s department store struck a deal to exclusively carry the Oh Baby line of the company. In 2008 the company changed its name officially to Destination Maternity.
