    A Brief History

Cracker Barrel was originally founded in 1969 by Dan Evins, who actually wanted to use the restaurant as a way to boost the sales of his gas station. Gas sales had started to decline as the interstate was built and many stations, like his, were passed over. He decided that the restaurant was the best way was to attract hungry travelers and set to work designing the first location.

The design of the restaurant came from the traditional country stores he use to visit when he was a child. Quickly the chain caught fire as more and more patrons began to swarm to the location. Seeing the success, Evins made the decision to open more locations attached to gas stations across Tennessee. Eventually the decision was made to phase out stations altogether and focus primarily on the restaurant and gift shop.
