    A Brief History

Coach started out as a family-run workshop in Manhattan that made wallets and billfolds by hand. As Miles Cahn and his wife Lillian joined the workshop, the company began to drift in a different direction. Cahn had worked to develop a way to make leather stronger, softer, and more flexible, while at the same time be able to absorb dye. Once this technique was perfected the Cahn’s set to work making women’s leather handbags which turned out to be an instant success. It wasn’t until 1961 that Coach would make the leap into high-end luxury goods. During this time, Bonnie Cashin was brought in to design handbags and Richard Rose was brought in to lead the company. Richard was the main driving factor for Coach’s success as he was able to get the products into department stores around the world.
