    A Brief History

Aldi can be traced back to a small store in the suburb of Essen that was founded by the mother of Karl and Theo Albrecht. Both brothers would take over their mother’s shop in 1946 and began to build the empire that is Aldi. By 1950 they had opened 13 stores in the Ruhr Valley that were providing meats and produce to local customers. The brothers had implemented a new idea in which they subtracted the legal maximum rebate of 3% before sale. Throughout their growth period they cut costs by avoiding advertising and by selling produce that wasn’t fresh. In 1960 the brothers had a falling out and split the company into two separate entities, Aldi Nord and Aldi Sud.
